Good CS saves money. Bad CS is a web writer with an English degree and some social media experience dictating design elements, project planning and other assets they have absolutely no understanding of.

Thanks for the comment. Dig TTAB's work. I'll be beating the scope = CS horse more soon.

Yup. As you suggest, I find that almost all content strategy work I do is as much about being a good "scope manager" as it is about being a great "content strategist". Getting people to agree on what content strategy is, and hearing all the different opinions about what it entails, has been tricky and enlightening.

Thanks.

This topic is relevant for any firm providing professional services. The concept of Scope Management is generally misunderstood to mean the prevention of "scope creep." What you've pointed out is that scope management can be THE value add in many cases. Talking about the elephant ultimately uncovers some of the most serious issues.

This is great. *Hat tip*

I strongly agree that practitioners need to be thinking through how they are scoping their content strategy engagements in terms of project impacts and operational impacts. And that value needs to be clearly and plainly communicated with clients and colleagues. This is, as I've tried to suggest in several venues now, the crux between "small tent" and "big tent" CS.

This field of practice is capable of much, but we as a community need to hedge against overstatement and hype. Which is, after all, a very pragmatic definition of scope management.
